Secret message is a puzzle which helps students with spelling prediction and grammatical structure. Students will find that not all letters need to be decoded, as they will be able to predict the remaining letters if they recognize the first few letters of the word, and they are rewarded for this by being able to solve the puzzle more quickly than their peers. As well, students will begin to recognize where to expect common articles like "the" and "is/are" as they decode more and more sentences.
You can click on letters to hide them in the legend, which forces students to predict what these letters are from words they recognize. Puzzles can also be designed to be more difficult by forcing students to use several words to decode certain letters. For example, if they decode the word "?AT", it could ambiguously be "CAT" or "HAT". If they encounter the same unknown symbol in the word "T?E", then they can deduce it must be "HAT" and "THE", not "CAT" and "TCE".
